Miles-long traffic backups reported after ‘multiple semi trucks’ involved in pileup

Missouri transportation officials have shut down parts of I-70 after several semi trucks and passenger vehicles were involved two major pileup crashes.

One crash happened around noon on Friday, February 15 in the westbound lanes of I-70 at mile marker 58 near Concordia, Missouri, as heavy snow fell, making the interstate slick and travel treacherous.

It isn’t clear how exactly many vehicles were involved in this crash but in images captured at the scene you can see at least five semi trucks.

The number of injuries from this crash isn’t yet clear

Another crash occurred around the same time on westbound I-70 at mile marker 29 near Oak Grove. This crash involves approximately 40 vehicles. The Missouri Highway Patrol reports that at least one person has died.

Miles-long traffic backups are being reported.

All westbound lanes of the interstate are closed at both crash scenes and there is no estimated time for reopening.

Snow will continue to fall through the afternoon in Missouri and road conditions will continue to deteriorate.
